Can you eat too much fiber?

Okay so I tend to eat 100% or a little less of my fiber each day. Well apparently with the foods I bought this week, I shall consume 200% or similiar, not counting fresh blueberries, granola, and almonds, and sometimes extra whole grain cereal. Is it harmful to consume this much fiber? Will be body become used to this amount of fiber and require it everyday, after 5-7 straight days? Also I was just reading about colon cleanses; will this work like a cleanse and even remove parasites (since numbers up to 85% of Americans have them).

Also I am on a dairy free diet since the doctor thinks I may be lactose intolerant (which if I am not and have symptoms when I go back in a week she will then test me for parasites and bacteria). So being dairy free for one more week, I am avoiding foods like cheese which are notorious for slowing us down, and instead mixing my veggies with pasta and lots of extra soy products this week (soymilk and soy yogurt).

Fiber’s the one that doesn’t technically digest, right?
It’s kind of like an organic scrubber brush for your bowels. I would guess that your ability to handle more fiber all depends on the state of your kidneys and liver, and how they react to it.

The human digestive system is pretty good at handling things, I say don’t worry about it unless you’re over the age of 50 or under the age of 12. If pain occurs, seek medical attention.

You can also just call this one in to a hospital/nutritionist usually at no charge beyond the phone call itself. They should have a detailed explanation they can give you in as little as 5-10 minutes.

Detoxing and/or cleansing have absolutely no medical benefit and are in fact harmful to the digestive system and internal organs. There is no build up of bad plaque in a normal system. If we had a layer of undigested foods or “toxins” lining our systems, we would all be dying of malnutrition since we would be unable to absorb any nutrients.
Our bodies “detox” 24 hours a day through respiration, sweat, liver, and kidneys.
We can help detox by eating a healthy diet with minimal added sugar and salt. Lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods, beans, peas, and brown rice keep a system as healthy as it can be. The lest processed your food is, the better.
Minimal alcohol, caffeine, soda. Try to drink 100 oz of ice cold water per day.
Read food labels. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t put it in your body. Extreme detoxing diets or supplements actually flush out the beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the digestive system.
To “cleanse” the digestive system, search foods high in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber “encapsulates” fats and toxins as they pass through the system minimizing absorption of fats and re absorption of toxins. 15 bean soup is a great hot food right now high in soluble fiber. Fiber foods give the intestines a good workout by giving them something to push against. Oh ya, that action (peristalsis) burns calories as well.
Spend your money in the produce department instead of giving it to someone peddling unproven, unregulated, and even dangerous products.
Good luck.

Is it just me or am I the only person that didn’t try to hook you with a link to the fad diet they are selling?

sarasewell answers:

You have to come up with some type of a reward system, this will help keep you motivated. One of the best things to do is make a contingency contract. Stating what you want to do, who will help you do it, and what do you get for doing it.

Then also try to find a well balance diet program. My friend did this one diet program where the average weight lose is 7 pounds in 9 days. It might be the thing you are looking for, I know it’s well balanced. If you want e-mail me and I can tell you more about either of these.

Would Acai Berry and a Colon cleanse help lose weight while on Accutane?

that being said I am on the medicine Accutane for acne and am in my 2nd month and loving the results. Obviously there are a lot of bad things going around about the medicine and that is why I am curious…

Would it be bad to mix the Acai Berry and possibly a Colon Cleanse system with the Accutane? I do not want to upset my body… but I do want to lose weight without bulking up like I tend to do. I am also curious if these products are natural like they say or if they have a lot of chemicals? For I don’t like to put to many chemicals and crazy things into my body.. I don’t even take Tylenol unless I am in dire pain.

I would be open to hear other suggestions but I am not looking to get into any extreme diet due to the fact that I already eat pretty healthy…

So overall I guess my question is How do I lose 10-15 lbs and slim down and NOT bulk up!

Thanks!

Today I had 1 cup boiled broccoli, a cup of beef bullion that I added raw mushrooms too, a total of 3 cups white rice (over the course of the day) a chicken tender that was grilled and seasoned with taco seasoning, and a bowl of tomato soup that i mixed milk and 1 pat of butter into.
You are right! The market is flooded with them but unfortunately most of them are terrible. In fact, you will be lucky to find a natural cleanser. I personally used Purity 12 and lost almost 9 pounds of weight. I was surprised because I tried quite a few cleansers previously and none of them worked. I actually recommended it to one of my work mates who was struggling to lose a few pounds and it worked a treat for him as well. I think they have a free trial offer at the moment here http://rds.yahoo.com/**http%3a//tinyurl.com/qfwfw5 so you can actually try it out for free for 30 days and see how much weight you lose.

sarasewell answers:

Laxative’s make you poop
A Cleanse helps empty the intestines as well. A natural cleanse is better. Plus you should prep your body before hand with a natural food diet for 3-7 days prior. A cleanse can make you feel good and bad.
Try a Colonic for the best results.

sarasewell answers:

The acai berry has no special properties and has nothing to do with fat loss. The myth began when a doctor, Dr. Mehmet Oz, from Columbia Uni mentioned the berry on the Oprah show and supplements makers, being the scammers they are, began promoting products using acai as having beneficial properties they don’t have often invoking the names of Oprah an Dr. Oz. Oprah and Oz filed suit against many supplements makets and the acai myth was born. Go here to read about it –> http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=8369105 Consumers, being credulous and ignorant of how supplements scammers bilk the public, began repeating and propagating the myth to the point of it becoming a global meme.

Forget the acai berry..uness you’re familiar with it and happen to like it. It does nothing special. End of story.

There is a lesson to be learned from the acai berry phenomena and that is that most supplement makers are frauds, fakes, and only interested in taking your money. In particular the areas of diet and fitness are plagued with such charlatans and beset with countless myths and you’ll see them every day in this forum. From protein shakes and muscle building supplements to silly Shake Weight and Ab Circle equipment to fad diets and green tea and Shape-Up toning shoes and on and on the BS runs rampant in Diet & Fitness. So, always be skeptical of and apply critical thinking to all advertising, reviews, articles, blogs, testimonials, and anything else which can be subverted by scammers. If a scammer can use it, they are.

Good luck and good health!!

I want to do the Master Cleanse to detox and lose weight for an event-How soon before the event should I stop?

Yes, I know Master Cleanse is a cleanse/fast not a diet. Yes, I know the risks. I read a lot of reviews here http://www.fitnesstipsforlife.com/master-cleanse-detox-diet.html and am well aware that I may gain weight back.
sarasewell answers:

You should ease out of the cleanse . It mostly takes a few day till your body will crave solid foods ans you should introduce the food back slowly.
BTW when you are on the cleanse you can exercise (many people do), you should have enough energy. It is very important you stop expecting to gain the weight back. Try to establish better, healthy eating habits after you are done.
By you having thought of weight gain ,you are instructing your body to doing it. So re-frame your thoughts on that.
Here is a good source of information on the topic:

Should I get the cleanse and if so, should i get a pill or is the other method best? I’m really worried, what should I do? Any diet plans or alternatives. Are enamas also colon cleanses?

Whether or not colon cleanses actually do anything for you is questionable at best. It sounds like your overall wellness isn’t so great though, from the way you describe yourself – depressed, fatigued, constipated.

Have you tried exercising? Exercise might seem counterintuitive when you’re fatigued, but it can actually help give you more energy during the day and give you better, more restful sleep at night. Exercise is also a proven treatment for mild to moderate depression and anxiety, because it releases “feel good” endorphins in the brain that stimulate serotonin absorption which improves mood. That’s why runners get a “runner’s high” after a jog – endorphins.

Exercise can also improve regularity, believe it or not. Doctors aren’t sure why exactly, but regular exercise (even if it’s just a daily walk) can stimulate slow bowels and help you have a more regular bathroom schedule. Being constipated is usually pretty minor but if it goes on for a long time it can cause you to feel tired, crampy, “stopped up”, and just generally like crap (pun not intended). So if you aren’t already exercising a few times a week, start doing that – get a gym membership, or buy some home weights, or just start jogging around the block. Even just walking daily can make a difference.

Also check out your diet. I know you said you try to eat healthy but are you still eating a lot of empty calories like refined white bread, sodas, and other “munchy food”? Those things basically turn to sludge in your intestines and can make constipation even worse. Stick to all whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables, and also make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D and B vitamins (which have been linked to improved mood). If you aren’t taking a daily multivitamin and you aren’t taking any other medications or vitamin supplements, start with a daily complete multivitamin (like One a Day Men’s Complete, or whatever floats your boat) and see if you notice a change in your overall well being.

If a couple of weeks of exercise, eating extra roughage, and multi-vitamins doesn’t help your all-around malaise, consider making an appointment with your doctor. You can discuss a colon cleanse with them if you want, but unless they’re a holistic practitioner they probably won’t suggest one. Cleansing your colon will “clean it out”, but it won’t get at the root of what is causing you to be chronically stopped up, which has something to do with diet and exercise.

Good luck!

Yes, it’s a very bad idea. Like the first answerer said it could trigger premature labor. I’m not sure that it would be a good idea immediately after either if you plan on breastfeeding. Colon cleansing is very dehydrating and dieting is generally a bad idea while breastfeeding. Be patient, the weight will drop off naturally in the next few months if you eat well and exercise. Also get a belly bandit, I swear that thing is really helping me.

Good Luck!
